Made over a 4-year period, “Invaluable” is Ruth O’Brien’s debut EP release.

This 5-track EP touches on a wide range of topics including society’s obsession with social media and appearance in tracks like Invaluable & Land With No Mirrors to more sombre themes of grief, love and connection in Lullaby…My Twisted Dreams and Veil. The final track on the EP, Perspective, talks about the many ways in which something can be seen – that we only ever understand something based on our point of view, both literally and metaphorically.

Recorded in Canberra, Australia, by local musicians and engineers, Invaluable is the result of countless hours of work by a whole team of amazing individuals. The EP is full of catchy, powerful melodies, rich vocal harmonies, meaningful lyrics, instrumental solos and has been recorded beautifully by James Ashley, Kyle Sheedy & Steve Zumstein.

about

This track refers to the modern day comparisons that can occur through the the use of social media. Growing up I felt that many people, particularly young people, measured their self-worth how they compared to celebrities in magazines.

Now I feel there is a heightened sense of comparison, not with celebrities but with each other. On social media you can present your life however you like and I what noticed around the time I wrote this song was that the majority of people I was Facebook friends with were choosing to share their successes, their good days and their life "wins". I also was driven to write this song because at least 3 friends within the space of a few weeks mentioned to me that they were feeling shitty about their lives because, on social media at least, it looked like everyone else was having a good time.

The point I want to drive home with this song is in the title - you're invaluable. You're priceless. You're unique. There's only one of you and that's immeasurable in value, worth and importance.

lyrics

Hey
Hello
How have you been going?
Things look great
‘Least that’s what’s on your Facebook page

And oh
Isn’t it true
That your life’s a dream,
Everyday’s a new surprise
Please
Share out your luck
I feel so stuck
Tell me what the secret is

Don’t believe
Everything you see
It’s not real
So don’t ever feel
Like you’re less precious
Coz you’re invaluable
Coz you’re invaluable

Hey, just wait
I know life isn’t always great but
Twitter says
That yours is goin’ ok
It might not be true
But what do I do
When my news feed tries to tell me it’s real
I can’t help but feel a little subpar
Like I’m not trying hard enough

Don’t believe
Everything you see
It’s not real
So don’t ever feel
Less precious
Coz you’re invaluable
