Made over a 4-year period, “Invaluable” is Ruth O’Brien’s debut EP release.

This 5-track EP touches on a wide range of topics including society’s obsession with social media and appearance in tracks like Invaluable & Land With No Mirrors to more sombre themes of grief, love and connection in Lullaby…My Twisted Dreams and Veil. The final track on the EP, Perspective, talks about the many ways in which something can be seen – that we only ever understand something based on our point of view, both literally and metaphorically.

Recorded in Canberra, Australia, by local musicians and engineers, Invaluable is the result of countless hours of work by a whole team of amazing individuals. The EP is full of catchy, powerful melodies, rich vocal harmonies, meaningful lyrics, instrumental solos and has been recorded beautifully by James Ashley, Kyle Sheedy & Steve Zumstein.

about

Land With No Mirrors is a comment on the obsession the Western world has with looks and how we want to be perceived. It was written to outline how focussed we are on individuality and how narcissistic and vain that can be. The chorus line "what if there was a land with no mirrors?" is a question that hopes to outline how much time we spend thinking about appearances, how important that is and how much more time we'd have for each other and the more important things in life if we weren't so focussed on the superficial.

lyrics

Verse:
Attention attention
I need attention
Every…everybody look at me
My opinion matters most of all
And I’m the most pretty
My gorgeous body
The colour of my hair
This new bag
What good taste I have
What good taste I have

Egoistic admiration, arrogance is rife
Hypocrites and narcissists are everywhere
Looks don’t matter’s what they say
And then get plastic surgery
Selfie sticks and profile pics are everywhere

Chorus:
But what if there was a land with no mirrors?
What if reflection was just a state of mind?
What if you only saw yourself through other people?
Would you see me as I see you?

Verse:
Connection, perception
Love and affection
Without these I’m an empty shell
I’ve done some thinking now I feel
I’ve been released from a spell
Don’t really know what happened there
What a fool I am
What a fool I am

It’s so easy to get caught up in the latest trends
Competition, fear of missing out
Consumerism at its best
To fill the void we can’t address
Status symbols, picket fences, stylish hair

(Chorus)

Keys solo

Bridge:
This self-absorption’s gotta go
It’s eating through your heart and soul
What you see ain’t always what you get
I value what’s inside (x2)

(Chorus and improv to fade)
