Made over a 4-year period, “Invaluable” is Ruth O’Brien’s debut EP release.

This 5-track EP touches on a wide range of topics including society’s obsession with social media and appearance in tracks like Invaluable & Land With No Mirrors to more sombre themes of grief, love and connection in Lullaby…My Twisted Dreams and Veil. The final track on the EP, Perspective, talks about the many ways in which something can be seen – that we only ever understand something based on our point of view, both literally and metaphorically.

Recorded in Canberra, Australia, by local musicians and engineers, Invaluable is the result of countless hours of work by a whole team of amazing individuals. The EP is full of catchy, powerful melodies, rich vocal harmonies, meaningful lyrics, instrumental solos and has been recorded beautifully by James Ashley, Kyle Sheedy & Steve Zumstein.

about

The lyrics for this track refer to the dreams Ruth had about her mother after she died in July, 2015. Grief is a funny thing, it's different for everyone and the mind processes loss at it's own time and pace. For 18 months after her passing, Ruth would dream about her mother most night - often waking up with a physical pain in her chest. This track, while haunting and emotive, is something that pays respect to importance of those we have lost who are no longer with us and that they live on in our dreams and memories.

lyrics

Oooh, oooh
I can see the moon is slowly rising
In the distance is the setting sun
Night again, the light has turned to darkness
Time to rest my weary bones and head

Oooh
Oooh

Close my eyes and you appear
So far away but still so near
I only want to see your face
If only for another day
Stay
In my twisted dreams
Please
Don’t leave…

…what am I to do?
Endless thoughts of you
Feel the tears rolling down my cheeks
Feel so wide awake though I’m asleep

Sing to me a lullaby
If only for a little while
To hear your voice, to touch your skin
Would be for me the largest win
Stay
In my twisted dreams
Please
Don’t leave

I’d scale the highest mountain
I’d climb the tallest tree
I’d swim through a raging river
To bring you back to me
If I could tell you one thing
It would be that I love you so
Why did this have to happen?
Why did you have to go?

Ooooh (til end)
