Made over a 4-year period, “Invaluable” is Ruth O’Brien’s debut EP release.
This 5-track EP touches on a wide range of topics including society’s obsession with social media and appearance in tracks like Invaluable & Land With No Mirrors to more sombre themes of grief, love and connection in Lullaby…My Twisted Dreams and Veil. The final track on the EP, Perspective, talks about the many ways in which something can be seen – that we only ever understand something based on our point of view, both literally and metaphorically.
Recorded in Canberra, Australia, by local musicians and engineers, Invaluable is the result of countless hours of work by a whole team of amazing individuals. The EP is full of catchy, powerful melodies, rich vocal harmonies, meaningful lyrics, instrumental solos and has been recorded beautifully by James Ashley, Kyle Sheedy & Steve Zumstein.

about
Perspective is about the different ways in which a topic or situation can be seen. We only ever see things from a certain angle based on our upbringing, our emotions, our intelligence, our experiences, our culture and our beliefs. As a person with a physical disability, I have been underestimated and often, mostly unintentionally, patronised based on what other people think I can achieve. Throughout my life, I've felt a constant need to prove my abilities whenever I've felt marginalised. Though this has pushed me, it's also tiring.
A particular lyric I like in this song is "climbed a mountain in the cold" which is a reference to my mum and I climbing Croagh Patrick in the west of Ireland in 2009 - that was bloody hard and I guess is an example of when I've underestimated myself.
Perspective is a song to remind us that there are other points of view and alternate versions of the truth - if we "step a little bit left or right" we might see things differently. It is hoped that this song can encourage us to keep an open mind.
lyrics
Verse:
Red, blue, yellow, pink and green
All the things that I have seen
Woah, woah
Climbed a mountain in the cold
All the things that I’ve been told
Woah, woah
Can’t do this, you can’t do that
Actually, I fuckin’ can
Woah, woah
Everyday’s a different view
Got nothin’ to prove to you
Woah, woah
Chorus:
3-dimensional space
Asymmetrical face
Panorama, bird’s-eye-view
Sweeping landscape
Sweeps me off my feet
Sow seeds that you can reap
Late, early or on-time
Both wrong or right
Your frame of mind
It’s all perspective
It’s all perspective
Verse:
Don’t take it personally
Try to think objectively
Woah, woah
Tell me what you really think
Watch as I don’t even blink
Woah, woah
Spin me round and let me go
Where I’ll land you’ll never know
Woah, woah
Sound of ocean in a shell
After life, heaven or hell?
Woah, woah
Chorus:
3-dimensional space
Asymmetrical face
Panorama, bird’s-eye-view
Sweeping landscape
Sweeps me off my feet
Sow seeds that you can reap
Late or early, on-time
Both wrong and right
Your frame of mind
It’s all perspective
It’s all perspective
(Sax solo)
Bridge:
Light refracting through the blinds
Can’t see rainbows from behind
Woah, woah
Love or hate
Plans or fate
Strong or weak
Red or green
Ooooooh!
3-dimensional space
Asymmetrical face
Panorama, bird’s-eye-view
Sweeping landscape
Sweeps me off my feet
Sow seeds that you can reap
Late, early or on-time
Both wrong and right
Your frame of mind
It’s all
Space
Asymmetrical face
Panorama, bird’s-eye-view
Sweeping landscape
Sweeps me off my feet
Sow seeds that you can reap
Late, early or on-time
Both wrong or right
Your frame of mind
It’s all perspective
It’s all perspective
